The UK and the EU will reach their latest deadline on brokering a post-Brexit trade agreement as talks enter their final day today between Brussels and London.
And as envoys from both sides are set to continue hammering out the details until the early hours, Boris Johnson is also expected to again speak to the European Commission’s Ursula von Der Leyen despite ongoing pessimism on the prospect of securing an accord.
UK government sources have warned the offer on the table from the EU is still “unacceptable” to the UK, with the country teetering on the edge of a no-deal Brexit that is predicted to cost jobs and force food prices to increase.
A Government source said: “Talks are continuing overnight, but as things stand the offer on the table from the EU remains unacceptable.
“The Prime Minister will leave no stone unturned in this process, but he is absolutely clear: any agreement must be fair and respect the fundamental position that the UK will be a sovereign nation in three weeks’ time.”
Raab – still a ‘long way to go’ on talks
Dominic Raab has told Sky News there was still “a long way to go” on brokering an agreement.
“I called in to check in with our team in Brussels, they’ve worked incredibly hard”, he said.
“You remember the PM has made clear we want to leave no stone unturned, so we’ve been at it very hard at the working technical level, with all the usual jousting of positions
“But what really matters is what the EU is willing at a political level to commit to.
“There’s a conversation that Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the (European) Commission, will have with the Prime Minister later today – that’s when we’ll know.
“But I think we need to be really clear there’s two fundamental issues at stake – the issue of fisheries and the issue of the so-called level playing field.
“We want to be treated like any other independent self-respecting democracy. If the EU can accept that at a political level then there’s every reason to be confident, but there is still I think a long way to go.”

Raab – ‘EU is concerned UK might do rather well’
The foreign secretary Dominic Raab is on Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday (sans Ms Ridge who is moving house today apparently) – and has said conflict with the EU was because Brussels was “concerned the UK might do rather well” after Brexit and was set on stifling its ability to compete.
He added that technical level negotiations were ongoing, adding that “the PM is clear we want to leave no stone unturned”.
He went on to say the “political logjam” could only be eased by the prime minister and the EU’s Ursula von der Leyen, who are due to speak later.
