President Trump continued to assail Attorney General Bill Barr, saying he should have “stepped up” to alert the country that President-elect Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, had been under investigation during the 2020 presidential campaign.
“Joe Biden lied on the debate stage he said there’s nothing happening, nothing happening, and Bill Barr should have stepped up,” the president said during an interview on “Fox & Friends” that aired Sunday morning.
But Fox News reporter Brian Kilmeade said if Barr would have spoken out during the election he would have been compared to former FBI Director James Comey who announced that the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server was reopened days before the 2016 presidential election.
“All he had to do is say an investigation is going on. And by the way, I don’t want to say anything bad happened to Hunter Biden. Whatever it is, it is the facts, but I don’t want to say anything bad happened to Hunter Biden. And I purposely stay out of it,” Trump continued.
“But when you affect an election … when they are saying things, making statements and the press is purposely not reporting it, Bill Barr, I believe, not believe I know, had an obligation to set the record straight,” the president said in the interview that had been recorded during the Army, Navy football game at West Point on Saturday.
He said that Barr should have acted more like then-special counsel Robert Mueller, who was heading the Russia probe, and disputed a 2019 BuzzFeed report that Trump directed his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress.
“But Bob Mueller stood up and he interjected that this article was false. Bill Barr should have done the same,” Trump said.
The two investigations into Hunter Biden and Barr’s efforts to keep them out of the public eye were revealed last week.
Barr also did not provide information about the investigation to congressional Republicans.
One of the investigations became public last week when Hunter Biden disclosed that he was being investigated for possible tax fraud during his time working for a Ukrainian gas company while his father served as vice president in the Obama administration.
