There no denying that smartphones have become extremely powerful machines that fit right into our pockets and are pretty much the center of our lives. Whether you are a gamer, content creator or just an everyday user, a smartphone is useful for everyone.
As smartphones get better everyday and brands add more features, we as consumers seem to pay for that added benefit. Smartphones from brands like Apple and Samsung cost upwards of Dh4000 if you want the best of the best.
Xiaomi on the other hand seems to think that a user shouldn’t be burning a hole in their pockets to get a feature-packed flagship device and they’ve done so for years. I recently got my hands on their new Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G. It starts at Dh1599 and gives you everything you would need out of a flagship smartphone.
Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G
Display and Body
The Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G comes with a flat 6.67-inch Full HD+ display with a 144Hz adaptive sync refresh rate. It is an IPS LCD panel with AdaptiveSync technology and MEMC for ultra smooth video. Now there is so much I love about this display (and I guess I should, it is the star of the show). Firstly, I love that it’s a flat display. I’ve never been a fan of curved displays. Secondly, the 144Hz refresh-rate is great! Scrolling is ultra-smooth and games look fantastic. Lastly, it must be noted that this is an IPS LCD. It doesn’t get as bright (max brightness at 650nits) as it’s counter-parts and did struggle a bit when outdoors under peak-sunshine. Coming from an AMOLED display, the colour on the phone didn’t seem as vibrant but we’re ‘bad’ in any shape or form.
Now a bit of a downer of the phone is the body. Weighing 218gms and coming in at 9.3mm at it’s thickest point, the Mi 10T 5G isn’t exactly the comfiest in your pocket. On the right of the body are the volume rockers and the finger-print sensor (which is fantastic). The phone is rounded at the edges and the back is curved for comfort in the hand. Now I don’t really have large hands so this didn’t exactly make a difference to me. The back of the phone is a fingerprint magnet so I definitely suggest using the case provided in the box which btw is a special case with anti-bacterial protection.
Power and OS
Under the hood of this Dh1599 smartphone isn’t a mid-range processor as you’d expect. The Mi 10T 5G is powered by the flagship level Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Our model had 6GB of RAM and I didn’t really feel it lag or slow down at any point. Depending on your usage you might need more RAM, but for my usage, the Mi 10T fared very well.
The Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G comes with Android 10 on-board with the overlay of Xiaomi’s own MIUI 12. With a well designed software and much lesser bloat ware than expected from Xiaomi, MIUI 12 really impressed me. Of course it’s not as clean as Moto’s MYUX or OnePlus’s Oxygen OS, but it’s optimizations do well to serve you. One very irritating feature on the updated OS (and I’m nitpicking here, you get used to it soon) is the fact when you swipe down for your notification bar and control center, instead of getting an all in one like all Android phones, you get the notifications on the left and the control center on the right. That being said, the UX brings features like Boost Speead and Cleaner which enable easy phone software and hardware management which I liked.
Camera
The camera on the Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G is a triple camera setup with 64MP (f/1.9, wide) + 13MP (f/2.4, ultra wide) + 5MP (f/2.4, macro) lenses. The camera takes some decent images but more impressively shoot up to 8K @ 30fps. 4K goes up to 60fps and 1080p goes up 960fps! The selfie camera on the Mi 10T is a 20MP (f/2.2) snapper and can shoot 1080p up to 30fps.

Battery and Charging
Now with a power-hungry processor and a 144Hz display, you’d think the Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G would struggle with battery right? Nope. It does a pretty good job. The 5000mAh battery on the device proves more than capable even on a heavy day with 2 e-mails buzzing, multiple chats and calls, some light gaming and even video-watching.
The Mi 10T 5G charger at 33W and comes WITH the charger in the box. Imagine, we live in a world where a Dh1599 phone comes with a 33W charger in the box. Crazy!
Should you buy the Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G?
There’s no denying that the Mi 10T 5G comes missing things like an IP-certification or wireless charging or even a telephoto lens but to me they are things you wouldn’t miss if I hadn’t pointed them out. Starting at Dh1599, the Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G provides phenomenal value for money with its flagship processor and good camera setup. If you want your money’s worth without breaking the bank, the Xiaomi Mi 10T 5G is definitely one of my top recommendations.
