Throughout Trump’s election challenges, Biden has maintained a steady demeanor, repeatedly expressing faith in American institutions to withstand the president’s efforts to stay in office — a point he plans to celebrate in his Monday speech.
“In America, politicians don’t take power — the people grant it to them,” Biden plans to say. “The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. And we now know that nothing — not even a pandemic —or an abuse of power — can extinguish that flame.”
Biden also plans to use the speech to emphasize his oft-repeated commitment to being “president for all Americans,” not only those who voted for him.
Biden’s speech coincides with the first day of public coronavirus vaccinations in the United States and as the country’s Covid-19 death toll surpasses 300,000.
“There is urgent work in front of all of us,” Biden plans to say. “Getting the pandemic under control to getting the nation vaccinated against this virus. Delivering immediate economic help so badly needed by so many Americans who are hurting today — and then building our economy back better than ever.”
