Mike McCarthy already has clinched a losing record in his first season coaching the Dallas Cowboys, but his job is not in jeopardy, according to the front office.
Team vice president Stephen Jones, the son of owner Jerry Jones, said Monday that McCarthy will not be fired following this injury-riddled season for the Cowboys (4-9).
“There will be absolutely no change with Coach McCarthy,” Jones said during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan. “I am surprised someone would question Mike, with this unprecedented situation that everyone has been in. On top of that — no one is making excuses — but we have had some real challenges in the injury category.
“If you look at his track record and his pedigree, he’s consistently won year in and year out. We have the utmost confidence that this ship is going to be righted quickly, and Mike’s going to be the leader of this group.”
The Cowboys have been without quarterback Dak Prescott since he suffered a season-ending dislocated ankle in Week 5 against the Giants. Backup Andy Dalton also missed three weeks with a concussion and a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
The Cowboys have gone 2-2 since Dalton rejoined the lineup on Nov. 22, including Sunday’s 30-7 win Sunday in his return to Cincinnati.
McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl with Green Bay to cap the 2010 season, was signed to a five-year contract in January.
