President Donald Trump has shared a tweet claiming that Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, both Republicans, will go to prison for their role in the 2020 presidential election.
The president retweeted the outlandish claim about Kemp and Raffensperger made by Lin Wood, a high-profile attorney who filed dubious, unsuccessful lawsuits challenging the results of the election.
“President Trump @realDonaldTrump is a genuinely good man,” Wood wrote. “He does not really like to fire people. I bet he dislikes putting people in jail, especially ‘Republicans.’
“He gave @BrianKempGA & @GaSecofState every chance to get it right. They refused. They will soon be going to jail.”
Wood included a photo of Kemp and Raffensperger with facemasks featuring the flag of China superimposed on them.
Georgia certified President-elect Joe Biden’s victory following a third vote count and an audit amid the Trump campaign’s unsubstantiated claims of mass voter fraud.
Wood joined former Trump campaign attorney Sidney Powell in claiming that Dominion Voting Systems voting machines had changed votes from Trump to Biden in Georgia.
A Trump-appointed federal judge denied an appeal to examine the machines on December 4 and there is no evidence of fraud on a scale that would change the election results.
On Monday, Wood tweeted that for supporters of the president it was”[b]etter to be safe than sorry”, advising them: “Make sure you have PLENTY of water, food, flashlights & batteries, candles, radio, 2nd Amendment supplies, & a plan to meet with leaders of your communities. Remember we only have 1 President at a time. Our leader is @realDonaldTrump, not Biden.”
Kemp and Raffensperger have become the targets of criticism from some of Trump’s supporters since Biden won Georgia. Kemp has been a staunch ally of the president but Trump supporters criticized his refusal to act on the president’s baseless allegations.
Raffensperger has previously dismissed claims of widespread voter fraud in the state, saying: “Truth matters, especially around election administration.”
“There are those who are exploiting the emotions of many Trump supporters with fantastic claims, half-truths, misinformation, and frankly, they’re misleading the president as well, apparently,” Raffensperger said.
The Electoral College met on Monday and affirmed that Biden had surpassed the necessary 270 votes needed to win the election.
However, Georgia is engaging in a limiting signature matching audit of absentee ballots in Cobb County, the state’s third-most populous county.
Trump and some of his Republican allies have called for a signature verification audit in the state for weeks, though the Cobb County audit is not expected to change the outcome of the election in Georgia.
