Celebrities and other notable Twitter users are offering witty and insightful commentary on a recording of actor Tom Cruise berating the London crew of the upcoming action film Mission: Impossible 7 for not following guidelines meant to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
In the recording, Cruise, who is also the film’s producer, threatened to fire any crew members who continue to disregard guidelines, yelling at them for potentially risking hundreds of jobs and livelihoods if the film’s production was shutdown due to an outbreak.
He swore several times and shouted throughout his nearly two-and-a-half minute rant.
After hearing Cruise’s rant, actor Josh Gad wrote on Twitter, “Tom Cruise is correct here FYI. Sorry/Not sorry.”
Designer Kenneth Cole wrote, “‘I want the truth’. ‘You can’t handle the truth’. -A few good men. Tom Cruise”, quoting Cruise and actor Jack Nicholson’s famous exchange from the 1992 military drama.
TV writer and former Simpsons showrunner Mike Scully wrote, “Dear Tom Cruise, Please come yell at America.”
Comedian Matt Fernandez wrote, “I love the Tom Cruise audio. Not because I think that’s the right way to talk to people. It’s just nice to finally hear an unhinged white person who’s PRO-mask.”
Actress Bethany Anne Lind wrote, “I don’t think it’s for anyone to judge an out-of-context ‘rant.’ But someone screaming at people (with the pretense of others losing their homes – when you could pay your entire crew their yearly rent without batting an eye) is gonna be triggering for some.”
She continued, “That being said… I for sure hollered in the privacy of my home tonight about someone not present and their decisions that affect me and the decisions I make during a pandemic and I would NOT want it to be shared.”
Abbi Crutchfield, host of the upcoming Hulu talk show Up Early Tonight, wrote, “In all fairness when I see someone with their mask below their nose at the post office I become Tom Cruise.”
Director Morgan J. Freeman wrote, “I’m fine with Tom Cruise’s desire for safe Covid protocols on set but I’m not okay with his abusive Scientology-based Messiah complex where he truly believes he’s the second f*cking coming of Christ.”
Daily Beast editor-at-large, Molly Jong-Fast, wrote, “Tom cruise can be both good on covid restrictions and a terrifying Scientologist.”
Author Douglas Karr wrote, “People cheering @TomCruise – making ungodly sums, hiring subcontractors with no benefits, no profit sharing, getting tax breaks, and protected as an ‘essential’ business Man facepalming – terrorizing his crew that he’s ‘saving’ the industry… is a great end to 2020. People love tyrants.”
TV writer Gennifer Hutchison wrote, “Y’all. Tom Cruise will be totally fine, even though I — someone with zero power over him, who he does not even know — said it’s not cool to scream at the crew. No need to twist yourself in knots defending him to me. You’re still allowed to like his movies, or even him, k?”
Finally, New York Magazine writer Yashar Ali composed a long thread calling out Cruise’s membership in the Church of Scientology.
“Please remember as you’re praising the audio of Tom Cruise yelling at crew members who don’t follow Covid restrictions that he’s the chief enabler of a criminal organization that has destroyed people’s lives, bankrupted and separated families, led to people being imprisoned, forced women to have abortions against their will, led people to die after being forced to follow dangerous pseudoscience, led former members to be chased all over the country/world by private investigators… And those are just the broader issues….Tom Cruise is evil,” Ali wrote.
Newsweek contacted Cruise’s agent for comment.
