- The HBO Max Roku app will launch Thursday, December 17.
- The current HBO Roku app will automatically update to the new app on that date.
- The launch comes less than 10 days before the debut of much-anticipated Wonder Woman 1984.
That sound you may be hearing is HBO Max and Roku users breathing a sigh of relief. Warner Media announced that the HBO Max Roku app will be available to download on all Roku-supported streaming sticks, set-box boxes, and smart TVs on Thursday, December 17.
HBO Max first launched several months ago, but without the support of two major streaming platforms: Roku and Amazon Fire TV. With Amazon adding an HBO Max app in November, things were looking bleak for all those Roku users. In the end, it’s likely Roku’s huge US user base was the biggest factor in Warner Media’s decision to add Roku support for the service. Indeed, the press release even has Roku’s Senior Vice President Scott Rosenberg makes a reference to the “more than 100 million people” in the US that use Roku devices. That means HBO Max will almost definitely get a new surge in subscribers to the service.
Roku already has an HBO app available, and users will see it automatically update to the new app on Thursday. New users can find the app in Roku’s “New and Notable” and “Movies & TV” categories on Thursday. Current HBO and HBO Max subscribers can use their login info on the Roku app, and new subscribers have the option to pay for their HBO Max subscription from inside the Roku app.
The app will launch eight days before the debut of perhaps the biggest movie of 2020, Wonder Woman 1984. Warner Media announced a few weeks ago that US audiences would be able to stream the DC superhero sequel on December 25 for one month at no additional cost. The movie is also debuting in movie theaters around the US that are open. Since that release plan was announced, Warner Media has decided to debut their entire Warner Bros. 2021 movie release lineup on HBO Max in the same way.
