But the momentum fizzled in 2020, the year we all stayed home because of COVID-19.
Young people, however, did not sit still. They continued their fight for a healthy future, whether it was in Zoom gatherings or by launching court cases.
Haana Edenshaw, a 17-year-old student and environmental activist from Haida Gwaii and a member of the Haida Nation, is among them. She and 14 other Canadian teenagers are suing the federal government for inadequate action to address the climate crisis.
The case was struck down in October by a federal court judge, but the 15 teens are appealing the court’s decision that the case cannot proceed because the claims don’t have a reasonable cause of action or prospect of success.
12 a.m. – Health officials share latest figures on COVID-19 in B.C.
B.C. health officials confirmed 624 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday and 11 new deaths.
The updated numbers from Health Minister Adrian Dix and Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, see total cases rise to 45,400 and total deaths rise to 724.
12 a.m. – Online applications for B.C.’s Recovery Benefit open
Online applications opened yesterday for the up to $1,000 B.C. Recovery Benefit. Phone applications start on Monday at 8:30 a.m. You have until June 30, 2021 to apply.
