The Calgary Fire Department is urging people to practise safety on ice after rescuing a worker at Calgary’s Midnapore Lake who broke through the surface Saturday morning.
Fire crews responded to a call around 8:45 a.m. for reports of a person in the water on the community lake in the southeast neighbourhood of Midnapore.
According to fire crews, a worker who was using a utility vehicle to clear the ice fell through the surface, submerging the machine and the worker in water 10 metres deep.
A nearby coworker had been able to rescue the worker from the hole in the ice and bring them to safety.
The fire department’s aquatic rescue team attended the scene alongside district firefighters, police and EMS crews. Medical crews assessed the worker who fell through the ice before transport to hospital.
The lake remains closed while officials investigate the incident.
Midnapore Lake declined immediate comment when reached by Postmedia Saturday.
According to the lake’s website, skating on the lake both on hockey rinks as well as on a pathway around the outside of the lake reopened to members Dec. 10.
In a press release, the Calgary fire department said Calgarians should only skate outside on city or community rinks. They said skaters should keeping a safe distance from riverbanks and lakeshores to avoid accidentally breaking through the surface.
