Calgary could be battered with up to 25 centimetres of snow by end of day Tuesday, according to Environment Canada.
Meanwhile, other locales in southwest Alberta could see twice as much snowfall.
The City of Calgary was placed under a winter storm watch early Sunday morning as a strong storm system is expected to pass through the Prairies over the upcoming days.
The low-pressure system is expected to develop in Montana Monday afternoon before entering southwestern Alberta.
According to Environment Canada, 30 to 50 cm of snow is expected in the area, including Banff National Park, by Tuesday evening. Easterly wind patterns are predicted to create more conditions where more than 50 cm of snowfall will be possible in some locations.
Canmore RCMP issued an advisory Sunday morning recommending against travel on a stretch of Highway 1 after overnight weather created “very poor” road conditions.
The RCMP detachment is advising against travel on Highway 1 West from Highway 1X to the Banff Park Gates.
“A winter storm has blown in with heavy, wet snow. There is little to no visibility at times with some accumulation. On and off ramps are also icy. Travel is not recommended at this time,” the RCMP said in a release.
Environment Canada also recommended Albertans avoid travel, saying anyone who must travel should inform others of their plans and carry and emergency kit.
