A Montreal seniors’ residence that is home to sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame, the Montreal Heart Institute and Barrie-Memorial Hospital in Ormstown are the latest institutions dealing with outbreaks of COVID-19.
General manager Yves Bergeron said nearly half the residents at Résidence Bonsecours in Westmount have contracted the virus along with 28 employees. A total of 126 retired nuns live in the private establishment.
There are also five deaths since the start of the outbreak, on Dec. 6, Bergeron said.
The CIUSSS du Centre-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal is joining with healthy employees to ensure residents receive the necessary services and the Red Cross will provide an additional 12 workers this week to help prepare meals and tend to patients.
Three patients at the Heart Institute have been transferred to another hospital and nine employees are in isolation.
A public relations officer for the institute said the hospital was in the process of disinfecting the two affected units.
Cardiologists from theMontreal Heart Institute are currently researching COVID-19 and certain treatments. They looked in particular at the use of colchicine, a promising drug for treating patients.
