Former journalist Dennis Abbott is appealing for help with a project about the Royal British Legion in Brussels. The Royal British Legion, sometimes called The British Legion or The Legion, is a British charity providing financial, social and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependants.
It provides lifelong support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families and has been doing so since 1921.
The COVID-19 pandemic has left some in the Armed Forces community in dire need of urgent help.
For those struggling with social isolation, financial difficulties and unemployment, to those facing the loss of loved ones and the threat of homelessness, the Legion’s support is more vital than ever.
Dennis, former editor of European Voice and also an ex spokesman at the European Commission, has now embarked on a project designed mark a special landmark for The Legion.
He explained,:“I am writing a history of the Royal British Legion in Brussels to coincide with a double centenary: the RBL in Britain is 100 in 2021 and the Brussels branch celebrates its centenary in 2022.”
Dennis, who lives near Brussels, admitted: “I didn’t quite realise what I’d let myself in for!”
He added: “I have visited the newspaper archives of the Royal Library (KBR) in Brussels to gather information on the early years of the branch.
“I’ve also (ongoing task) been gathering facts, figures and anecdotes from the minutes of branch meetings going back to the mid-80s (sadly no earlier minutes appear to have survived) as well as a decade’s worth of branch newsletters (2008-2019).”
He now needs help to complete the project.
He said: “I’m keen to hear from anyone happy to share photographs or stories linked to the Royal British Legion in Brussels and which they’re happy for us to use in the history.”
