The Ottawa teen charged with first-degree murder in the daytime shooting of a man near a southeast Calgary park won’t be going home for Christmas.
Youth court Judge Gary Cornfield on Monday agreed with Crown prosecutors Melissa Bond and Zailin Lakhoo that there were grounds to detain the now 16-year-old pending trial.
Ottawa lawyer Michael Smith, who appeared in court via video link from his office in the nation’s capital, had sought his release.
At Smith’s request, Cornfield earlier imposed a publication ban on the proceedings, which included the evidence and the judge’s reasons for detaining the teen.
The youth, then 15, was arrested shortly after the July 14 shooting death of Edmonton man Christian Navos, in what police said was a drug-related, targeted killing.
The teen was charged along with two adults in connection with the death of Navos, 32, whose body was found in a vehicle near the intersection of Legacy Parade and Legacy Lane S.E.
Police were called to a park in the area around 3:50 p.m. on that day, after receiving reports that someone had been shot.
The two adults, Troy Lemke, 36, and Joseph Chlala, 19, remain in custody and are also charged with first-degree murder. Lemke has been ordered detained by Justice Paul Jeffries and Chlala is scheduled to make a bid for bail next month.
They are also due to face a seven-day preliminary inquiry in the spring.
The youth, who appeared in person but did not address Cornfield, is back before the court in early January.
