Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon apologized Tuesday after being caught breaching coronavirus restrictions.
The Sun newspaper published a photo of the Scottish National Party leader, talking to people inside a pub at a wake, while not wearing a mask.
“Last Friday, while attending a funeral wake, I had my mask off briefly,” Sturgeon said in a statement to the BBC. “This was a stupid mistake and I’m really sorry. I talk every day about the importance of masks, so I’m not going to offer any excuses.”
The Sun had also reported that Sturgeon took her mask off briefly before leaving the venue.
The wake was for a Scottish government civil servant who had died with COVID-19, according to a local report.
Scotland’s coronavirus regulations say that customers in hospitality venues must wear a face covering except when seated.
