Who says there’s no free lunch?
MPs recently got their lunch gratis in the House of Commons lobby for a total of $891 daily, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.
It’s the first time the amount has been disclosed in 29 years, with the Office of the Speaker saying the free buffet lunch has been happening since 1991 as a courtesy for MPs attending debates.
“Providing food for members in the lobbies is a long-standing practice which was first introduced in 1991 further to consensus amongst all parties,” Speaker’s Office spokesman Heather Bradley said. “Food is provided in the lobbies to help support members.”
Eleven days of pandemic sittings saw the lunches come to a total cost of $9,806 or the equivalent of $891 daily as fewer MPs were assigned to attend debates by their caucuses due to social distancing rules.
Otherwise, MPs get a $21 per diem for lunch.
Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski testified he knows MPs who take advantage of the Commons lobby free food buffet whether they’re on House duty or not.
