In the end, the 2020 editions of Osheaga, Île Soniq and Lasso were all cancelled and there hasn’t been a Bell Centre show since the first lockdown hit in March. But hope springs eternal, and so earlier this month the company announced that Osheaga 2021 is set for July 30, 31 and Aug. 1, with the headliners Foo Fighters, Cardi B and Post Malone.
But Farkas doesn’t want to sugarcoat what the year has been like for a concert promoter.
“Work-wise, it’s really really hard,” he said. “What we do is not fun anymore. It used to be, you worked your ass off, then a show happened. You work, you work and a festival happens. There’s something after you’ve worked to that point. There’s an outcome and the outcome’s the event and it happens in front of people. Now, we just keep working but nothing ever happens. It’s like being stuck in a perpetual hamster wheel where you’re working and working and working and you’re used to that gratification of … you’re all exhausted, but you get to the festivals and they happen and you have a great time and it works out. And that was really hard for the team. To work hard to put together the lineups (of the festivals). There’s so much effort put into everything and then to watch it not happen, it’s surreal … it’s been a whirlwind of negativity mostly.”
