The male officer also suffered a cut lip after the suspect shoved his fingers in the officer’s mouth during the struggle.
Emergency backup was called and the man was arrested for assaulting the two officers. He was taken to jail but is expected to undergo a mental health assessment.
Both officers completed their shifts and are expected to recover.
“This is another example of the unpredictable nature of police work, and the dangers VPD officers face every day while working to keep Vancouver safe,” said Addison.
B.C.’s Mental Health Act allows police to apprehend anyone who appears to be suffering from a mental health disorder and is a danger to themselves or others, and to deliver that person to a doctor for an examination.
In recent months, there has been much popular discourse over how police could be better supported in such scenarios and whether funding could be diverted to boost mental health and social services to better meet the needs of those with mental health struggles.
