This kitty went from the trash heap to top cat!
A housecat rescued from a garbage bag seconds before death at a Russian waste-processing plant has been named an honorary assistant to the regional environment minister, according to The Moscow Times.
Video footage captured earlier this week at the plant in central Russia’s Ulyanovsk region shows workers sorting trash along a conveyer belt when one got the surprise of a lifetime.
“The cat wasn’t meowing and the bag wasn’t moving,” the worker, Mikhail Tukash, reportedly told local television. “I needed to cut the bag to screen it for metals. I was just doing my job.”
The video shows Tukash tearing open the bag to find the black-and-white cat, which he showed off to bemused co-workers and comforted with pets.
Had the feline stayed on the conveyer belt, it would have been seconds away from using up all nine of its lives, The Moscow Times reported, citing the plant’s director.
“We’re taking the cat to our ministry and all employees will take responsibility for it,” said the region’s environmental affairs minister, Gulnara Rakhmatulina, according to the report.
The kitty — who will be named through a contest — will serve as an honorary deputy in charge of wildlife protection.
Tukash and the plant’s director were also honored with letters of appreciation.
Veterinarians who examined the wayward cat found that it was healthy, well-fed and likely domestic.
“If you can’t keep an animal at home, you can always give it away to a shelter,” said Rakhmatulina, addressing the former owners who apparently disposed of the cat.
According to local television reports, at least three animals have previously been rescued at the plant, which sits about 430 miles east of Moscow: two red-eared slider turtles and an African hedgehog nicknamed “Vezunka,” the Russian word for “lucky.”
