The City of Windsor is temporarily suspending the bylaw requiring residents to put their garbage in hard-sided containers.
The bylaw will be waived from Dec. 28 to Jan. 10 in recognition that the Christmas season usually results in more garbage piling up. The city is allowing residents to put two extra garbage bags out for collection.
The bags must weigh less than 20 kilograms, or 44 pounds, and be placed on the ground beside garbage containers. Don’t put them on top of your garbage cans.
Starting the week of Jan. 11, the hard-sided container bylaw goes back into effect.
The city is asking people to have their garbage at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day. If you’re not sure when your collection day is, call 311 or go online to citywindsor.ca.
As a reminder, the city said crews will not pick up furniture, appliances, electronics, loose material or household chemical waste.
The Public Drop Off Depot at Central Avenue and E. C. Row Expressway is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the disposal of garbage, red and blue box recyclables, cardboard, appliances, renovation material, tires and yard waste. Tipping fees may apply.
The depot will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 26 and Jan. 1.
