The province’s police watchdog is investigating the police shooting of a 30-year-old man Christmas morning in St. Catherines.
The Special Investigations Unit says at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday morning, the Niagara Regional Police Service was asked by “another police service” to help locate an individual likely heading to Niagara — described only as a “person of interest”.
At 2:46 a.m., police located the vehicle near Vansickle Rd. and St. Paul St. W. in St. Catharines.
Police used a stop stick to pull over the driver.
“There was an interaction between officers and the 30-year-old man who was driving the vehicle. While the man was outside of the vehicle, two officers discharged their firearms and the man was struck,” The SIU said in a release on Christmas Day.
“A knife was located at the scene and is in the possession of SIU forensic investigators. Investigators have also taken possession of two police-issued firearms.”
The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators are investigating this case.
Also, two subject officers and five witness officers have been designated.
Anyone with information is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officials where an interaction with the public may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person..
