It’s unclear exactly how much those figures have risen, as the province is taking a break from providing complete statistics over the holidays.
For the third day in a row, the province also didn’t report whether any new COVID-19 fatalities had occurred. Updated figures regarding active COVID-19 cases and fatalities, as well as a regional breakdown of the numbers, are expected on Monday.
Thursday’s estimated cases came from approximately 17,800 tests, for a positivity rate of around 6.7 per cent.
The cases recorded Friday came from around 14,200 tests, for a positivity rate of about 6.3 per cent.
Alberta had last recorded fewer than 1,000 infections in a day on Nov. 17, when there were 730 new cases.
There were 821 COVID-19 patients in hospital as of Wednesday, when the province last provided a full update. Of those, 146 people were in ICU.
There were also 17,821 active cases of the virus across the province, including 6,470 in Alberta Health Services’ Calgary zone.
At least 890 people have died due to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
