Biathlon Basics
Biathlon is a sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting and it’s the most popular winter sport in Europe. If you want to experience this, TRYBIATHLON offers visitors the chance to personally experience the sport at the Canmore Nordic Centre, where Canada’s national biathlon team trains. The experience includes two hours of instruction and biathlon range training and is suitable for all abilities. Funds raised from the program go to support junior biathlon programs across Alberta.
Ice Bubble Photography
On Instagram, you’ll find countless pictures of Abraham Lake and its ice bubbles. Each winter, pockets of methane gas freeze in layers in the ice. Put the bubbles in the foreground and the mountains in the background and you get an incredible photo-op. The bubbles are formed when bacteria break down organic matter at the bottom of the lake. This phenomenon happens in other Alberta lakes, but it is more visible at Abraham Lake because high winds in the area tend to keep the surface free of snow. Some places on the lake are unstable and a guided tour is the safest way to experience the bubbles. If you go on your own, one of the best access points to the lake is near the sign for Hoodoo Creek.
Rent Some Gear and Take a Class
The University of Calgary Outdoor Centre offers a variety of winter gear rentals and classes. Winter training programs include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice climbing, caving, backcountry skiing and more. You’ll also find great learn-to-ski programs at the Canmore Nordic Centre and most of Alberta’s downhill ski resorts.
