New Delhi: The Indian entertainment industry has been making us proud internationally. Though this dreadful year has had very less celebratory moments, many Indian shows, movies and web series have garnered international recognition for its content and the art of storytelling. From ‘Jallikattu’ making it to the nominations of the Oscars to ‘Delhi Crime’ winning big at the Emmy Awards, many Indian shows have got international recognition in 2020.

‘Delhi Crime’ has won the Best Drama Award in the International Emmy Awards. Directed by Richie Mehta, this web series is based on the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case that took place in the neighbourhood of Munirka, in South Delhi. Other web series including ‘Four More Shots Please’ and ‘Made In Heaven’ were also nominated for the Emmy Awards this year.
‘The Family Man’ won four big awards at the 2020 Asian Academy Creative Awards. It bagged the award for the Best Drama Series, Best Direction and Best Original Screenplay. Manoj Bajpayee brought home the award for the Best Actor in a Leading Role. ‘The Family Man’ tells the story of a working man from the National Investigation Agency who tries to protect the country from terrorism.
‘Four More Shots Please!’ won an award in the Best Rising Star category at the prestigious Asian Content Awards 2020, which is a part of the Asian Content Awards 2020. The lead cast of the web series which comprises of Kriti Kulhari, Maanvi Gagroo, Sayani Gupta and Gurbani Judge has bagged the enviable win in the ‘Best Rising Star’ category. The web series follows the story of four unapologetically flawed millennial women who celebrate and discover their lives.
Talented actor Adil Hussain bagged the Best Actor award at the Indo German Film Week in Berlin, for two of his recent performances ‘Pareeksha’ and ‘Nirvana Inn’. ‘Pareeksha’ has been directed by Prakash Jha and the movie revolves around a rickshaw driver who dreams of providing quality education to his son. The film takes on the education system in the country. ‘Nirvana Inn’ has been helmed by Vijay Jayapal and the film revolves around the cycle of birth, death and reincarnation.
‘The Disciple’ is a film directed by Chaitanya Tamhane. This movie has bagged the prestigious FIPRESCI award at the 2020 Venice Film Festival becoming the first Indian movie in the last 20 years to be chosen for the main competition at a European Film Festival. ‘The Disciple’ won the Best Screenplay Award at the film festival this year. The plot of the movie revolves around the life of an Indian classical music vocalist who diligently follows the footsteps of his old masters, his guru and his father. But as the story unfolds, he starts to wonder if it is really possible to achieve the excellence he is striving for.
‘The Sleepwalkers’ brought home the Best Midnight Short Award at Palms Spring International Short Fest earlier this year. This movie also marks actress Radhika Apte’s directorial debut who also wrote the film. This movie stars Shahana Goswami and Gulshan Devaiah in the pivotal roles who find themselves in a delusional state and try to discover if they are sleepwalking.
Malayalam actress Kani Kusruti won the prestigious International Award for Best Second Actress by Imagine Film Festival in for the Malayalam movie ‘Biriyaani’. This movie tells the story of a Muslim woman who is confined within the four walls and forced to conceal her desires in the name of religion and societal norms.
And lastly, ‘Jallikattu’ has been nominated from India for the ‘93rd Oscars Awards’. A total of 27 films from India were in the race for nominations for the ‘93rd Academy Awards’ including ‘Shakuntala Devi’, ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’, ‘Chhappak’, ‘Bhonsle’, ‘Serious Men’, ‘Bulbul’, ‘The Pink Is Sky’ and others including two Marathi films. The plot of ‘Jallikattu’ revolves around a bull which escapes from the slaughterhouse that creates havoc amongst the villagers. The subplot of the film illustrates unemployed youth, problematic love triangle and others.
