VICTORIA — A small mixed-breed dog dragging a leash was found in Saanich on Wednesday, so sweet and in need of cuddles that a Saanich animal control officer took her home over Christmas.
“I just did not have the heart to leave her there over the next few days,” said Deb Barry, who has worked at the Capital Regional District Animal Shelter since 2013, after retiring from the military. “I didn’t want her to be alone. She’s our little Christmas angel, just a sweetheart.”
Don Brown, chief bylaw officer for the CRD, said the dog was found on McKenzie Avenue near Braefoot Road on Wednesday afternoon, wearing both a collar and a leash but no licence.
On Saturday, Brown said the dog remains unclaimed. He is concerned not only for the animal but also for its owner.
Barry said the female dog resembles a toy poodle and probably weighs about eight pounds. The dog is “a senior” — at least 15 years old — and losing her hair. She is trained and does not have fleas or any other indications of living on the street.
