It may have been the least busy Boxing Day that Windsor-Essex has seen in a generation.
Far from the usual post-Christmas binge of bargain hunting and gift returning, Dec. 26 this year was marked by empty parking lots and short lines.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, the numbers of people at normally popular shopping locations were minimal compared to what’s been seen on even non-holiday weekends.
The Devonshire Mall — usually the most crowded place in Windsor on Boxing Day — sat quiet with most of its shops and services closed.
The building was open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for essential services and curbside pickup.
The Ontario government’s ‘grey’ status or lockdown rules went into effect province-wide at 12:01 a.m. Saturday morning — prohibiting in-person customers at most retail locations.
Supermarkets, grocery stores, and convenience stores are allowed to have in-person shopping at 50 per cent capacity.
Large multi-department stores like Walmart and Costco are limited to 25 per cent capacity.
