Chatham-Kent police have laid a charge after discovering more than 100 unmasked people inside a church in Wheatley on Saturday.
According to police, the large gathering took place in the Old Colony Mennonite Church at 22046 Wheatley Rd. around 11 a.m.
Officers went to the location in response to a report from the public.
The gathering was ongoing when officers arrived. No masks were being worn.
Police said one member of the church — a 50-year-old man who resides in the community of Merlin — took responsibility for the gathering.
The officers then requested that the church end its service early. All attendees left the property without incident.
The man was charged with failure to comply with the Reopening Ontario Act. He’s been scheduled for a court appearance on Jan. 27.
Under the Ontario’s lockdown rules, which went into effect province-wide on Dec. 26, all religious services are limited to 10 people, whether indoors or outdoors.
