A horrific rollover crash in Coquitlam landed one car on its roof and another in the ditch on Sunday morning.
Around 9 a.m., an eastbound vehicle on Highway 1 in Coquitlam reportedly took the Brunette Avenue off-ramp at high speed and was launched into the air when it struck a traffic island.
The car then hit a northbound Kia Sorrento that was stopped at the intersection, causing it to flip onto its roof, before the momentum of the collision carried the first car over Brunette Avenue, beyond the barrier and landed it in a ditch.
First responders – including Coquitlam and Burnaby firefighters, Coquitlam RCMP, and paramedics – are at the scene on Sunday morning.
According to B.C. Emergency Health Services, the collision was reported around 9:04 a.m. Sunday. Four individuals received treatment at the scene, two of which were later taken to hospital in critical condition. The other two were taken to hospital in stable condition.
No information is available on whether those patients were in the first vehicle or the Kia Sorrento.
A number of transit routes in the area had been redirected. The Brunette overpass was closed in both directions and off-ramps were blocked. Both re-opened at around 8 p.m.
