Nearly a decade removed from winning the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player, Corey Perry’s most productive seasons are probably a distant memory.
But that doesn’t mean the newest member of the Canadiens, at age 35, is ready to ride off into the sunset.
“I heard I couldn’t skate when I first came in the league and I’d never play,” Perry said Tuesday afternoon during a video conference call, and after having driven to Montreal from London, Ont., the previous evening. “I use all those things as fuel and fire.
“I put those things behind me, focus on what’s in front. I’m a guy that’s going to go and get it,” added the 6-foot-3, 213-pound right-winger. “My body feels good. I feel good mentally.”
Perry is the latest piece to what has suddenly become a deep, and general manager Marc Bergevin hopes, talented roster. But Perry was well into the free agency period before signing a one-year deal with Montreal on Monday — less than a week before training camp begins this Sunday.
