The Bloc Québécois wants the federal government to require a negative COVID-19 test result for all travellers entering Canada, not only those arriving by plane.
In a statement issued Thursday, Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet welcomed the measures announced by the federal government Wednesday, which will soon require all air travellers to provide a negative COVID-19 test result before entering the country.
But Blanchet criticized the government for not acting sooner in the face of the new coronavirus variant circulating in the United Kingdom. A few cases of the variant have now been detected in Canada, including in Quebec.
The Bloc leader also made other recommendations to the Trudeau government, including that Canadians who cancel their trips because of COVID-19 be reimbursed for their expenses as an incentive to stay in Canada.
The party also suggested allowing border officials to impose a controlled quarantine near entry points.
