The Council of Hasidic Jews of Quebec says ultra-Orthodox Jewish schools are not violating the Quebec government’s decree by remaining open during the holiday break.
The council is also accusing Quebec Education Minister Jean-François Roberge of using the Hasidic community as a scapegoat.
Earlier in December, the government decreed that Quebec’s elementary and secondary schools would remain closed until at least Jan. 11 and that distanced learning options would be provided to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
The Council for Hasidic Jews says the calendar for its schools doesn’t allow for vacations between late December and early January.
It also says distanced learning isn’t feasible in its schools, so closing them would make it impossible to meet the educational needs of children in the community.
The organization adds that the decree allows schools to offer educational services in the classroom for students with special needs. In its view, Hasidic students fall into that category.
