Jose Mourinho revealed his favourite team to watch are Aston Villa after his Tottenham side ruthlessly disposed of Leeds on Saturday.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min equalled the Premier League record for most goal combinations in a season as they inspired Tottenham’s 3-0 win.
Kane, who opened the scoring from the penalty spot, teed up the South Korean’s 100th goal for the club as the pair combined for a 13th time this term, matching the tally set by Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton at Blackburn in 1994-95.
They have been the story of the season for Spurs and are just four short of equalling the total record of 36 set by Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard while at Chelsea.
Their unison here was timely as their contribution ended a four-game winless run in the Premier League, with Toby Alderweireld adding a third shortly after the break.
It was the first time Spurs scored three goals in a league game since they drew 3-3 with West Ham in October as the shackles finally came off after a month of sitting on leads.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men had their moments, had 64% possession and peppered the Spurs goal with 16 shots, but they lacked the quality to ever look like winning.
Mourinho was pleased with the result but felt there was room for improvement.
Mourinho told BT Sport: “The three points are very important. I think we understood well how they could hurt us and how we could hurt them. In that aspect I’m happy but I still think we can, and we have to, get better.”
On Harry Kane and Son Heung-min’s partnership, Mourinho added: “Of course, the understanding is good and against Leeds it was important to have that ability in attack. They stay man-to-man so if you stay static you give them an easy job. That movement of Harry Kane and Sonny in the finishing positions fit well.
“I think in the Premier League there are many good players everywhere even in clubs where you don’t believe they can have great players. But I have to say that Sonny and Harry are doing special things this season.
“I want goals coming from other players and I want them to feel like they can express themselves. We had Toby [Alderweireld] of course in set-plays and players in other positions to score. We have players from other positions appearing in finishing positions which is what I want from them.”
Mourinho then revealed his fondness for Villa.
“When we played the people who are considered the top six people say easier games are coming but I of course don’t believe it. Leeds are difficult and Aston Villa is my favourite team in the Premier League at the moment. I enjoy watching them, they have good players and very well coached. This is up next,” added the Spurs boss.
On games getting cancelled for Covid-19: “I go back to the initial rules of if you have 14 players available you have to play. I don’t see another reason for not doing it.
“I think every club does the best for their players to keep them all safe but then there are moments in private lives which you cannot control. Not everyone can be blamed so we have to carry on. If somebody has some positives, we have to play.”
Son proud
Goalscorer Son also revealed his delight after another fine display.
“It was a really difficult game,” Son told BT Sport. “We have been working so hard and created chances from the start of the game.
“To get the clean sheet and win 3-0, it’s a fantastic way to start the new year.”
Son was proud to reach a century of goals for Spurs.
He told BT Sport: “Obviously I couldn’t wait. I’m very happy and very grateful for the team-mates and everyone who has supported me.
“It hasn’t come automatically by me alone. I’ve needed a lot of help for this big achievement and I’m very proud.”
