Petitioners are asking the Ministry of Health and B.C.’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry to extend the break by two weeks.
B.C. has seen a spike in COVID-19 cases in the past month, with more than 500 new cases a day in the last week, the petition states.
They are asking Henry extend the winter break for all students and “make a new plan on how to safely return to school.”
Students are set to return to school on Monday, however, there is concern about a new strain of the virus that is more contagious.
5 a.m. – COVID didn’t stop New Year polar bear dippers from taking part in their tradition
What a difference a year makes.
Remember how exciting it was to greet 2020 on Jan. 1 a year ago, if you were one of the record 6,000 people who registered for the polar bear swim? It was the iconic swim’s 100th anniversary, which probably makes it the oldest polar bear swim in the world.
Although official polar bear swim festivities were cancelled this year because of COVID-19, that didn’t stop a lot of people from jumping into the chilly waters off English Bay to ring in the new year on Friday.
“Nope, COVID isn’t stopping me from doing something I’ve done for 11 years now,” chilly dipper Andrew Caswell said after pulling on a thick hoodie in a hurry.
The first official English Bay polar bear dip was in 1920, held on the heels of the First World War and the Great Flu. The decade would go on to be called the Roarin’ 20s for the jazz, flappers, architecture, literature and speakeasies that emerged from the gloom.
