Unifor announced on Saturday how one of its members — a long-term care worker with over three decades of experience — was among those who have died in recent days from complications related to COVID-19.
Sheila Yakovishin, 60, was an employee for over 30 years at Berkshire Care Cente, located downtown in the 300 block of Dougall Avenue.
“On behalf of our union, I express the deepest condolences to Sheila’s family and all those who knew and loved her,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor’s national president.
The long-term care home is among those in the midst of dealing with a widespread virus outbreak with 82 residents and 38 staff having tested positive for COVID-19, according to Unifor.
Yakovishin died on New Year’s Eve.
“As the New Year begins, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage unchecked in Ontario’s for-profit long-term care homes,” Dias said. “It must be stopped, we must protect health care workers from this disease.
