Montreal will launch its first complete snow-clearing operation of the new year on Sunday.
In a statement, the city said it will begin clearing snow from its streets as of 7 a.m. Sunday after receiving at least 13 centimetres of snow Friday and Saturday.
The city will deploy about 2,200 snow trucks to tackle its 10,000 kilometres of roads, sidewalks and bike paths. Hospitals, public transit routes and busy streets will be given the priority.
It will be the first official snow-clearing operation to take place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are ready for this operation, and everything is in place for it to run smoothly,” Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante said in a statement, “while respecting health regulations to protect our employees and offer the best possible level of service to citizens.”
In a tweet Saturday, Plante recalled the city had added 3,000 free parking spaces during the pandemic.
