“They’re people who rolled up their sleeves to help Quebec, where they chose to live, and a place they’re now hoping will choose them in return,” he added.
Among those to receive the dish Saturday was Mamadou Konaté, a 39-year-old asylum seeker who contracted COVID-19 while working in a long-term care centre last April.
Konaté’s story made headlines last year when he was championed by advocates and politicians as an example of how migrants stepped up to help during the pandemic.
Since arriving in Quebec from the Ivory Coast in 2016, Konaté has worked for Hydro-Québec, in warehouses and for transport companies across the province.
During the pandemic, he worked in three different long-term care centres. Facing deportation, he was detained by immigration authorities in September after inquiring about his status. He was released in October, but barred from returning to work.
