I believe Mayor Drew Dilkens got off too lightly regarding his recent big night out at Nico Taverna to launch a new whiskey product.
On that occasion, the mayor was not in compliance with the health and safety regulations in effect in our region.
During a pandemic, it is simply unacceptable for our mayor to believe he is above the law and a mere apology is insufficient.
The mayor should make a concrete demonstration of how he intends to stay aware of and in compliance with local requirements.
I am especially concerned that neither Mayor Dilkens nor the other participants at the gathering in question seem to have been fined or charged by bylaw officers.
This is not simply a matter of a charitable donation in lieu of a fine. This is a case that directly affects the health and safety of the community.
City council must ensure that bylaw personnel have the resources and authority to enforce the law regardless of the culprits. Our lives may depend on it.
