Bruno Fernandes says Manchester United “can’t make the same mistakes anymore” if they are to start winning big games and trophies.
United were beaten 2-0 by neighbours Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.
Second half goals from John Stones and Fernandinho sent City through the final for the fourth straight year.
The Red Devils, on the other hand, suffered a fourth consecutive semi-final defeat as another chance at a trophy fell away.
For Fernandes, it was his third defeat in a last four tie since joining United 12 months ago. He was also a part of the FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea and Europa League defeat to Sevilla last term.
Reacting to his team’s disappointing result on Instagram (via the Metro) on Thursday evening, the Portuguese star says they must be better when it matters.
“I’m very sad and disappointed to once again don’t reach a final,” he admitted.
“We have a lot to fight yet but we have to learn and understand that we can’t make the same mistakes anymore.
“We need to make an effort to further improve and be able to fight for trophies!”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will start their journey in another cup competition this weekend. They play Championship outfit Watford in the FA Cup on Saturday.
They will also have the chance to go top of the Premier League when they travel to Burnley next week.
Diallo delighted to complete transfer
In other news, Amad Diallo says it is a “dream come true” to finally be a Manchester United player after completing his move to Old Trafford.
United agreed a deal to sign him in October but lacked the necessary paperwork for him to play.
But he has now received a work permit and has been able to join up with his new teammates. He has put pen-to-paper on a deal until 2025, with the option for an extra year.
And despite the delay, Diallo insists he is ready physically and mentally to get started. Read what he had to say in full here…
