Sarma while speaking at All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union’s 20th Martyrs day function in Golokganj said, “Land of indigenous people in the undivided Goalpara district has reduced as people sold their lands and through deceit and other means this lands were purchased.”Himanta Biswa Sarma
He added, “Even if you get Rs 10,000 less, sell the land within the relatives. Earlier people used to sell land to meet the expenses of illness however now that the government is taking care of the expenses there is no need to sell land. We are planning to bring a law to secure the remaining land of indigenous people.”
Sarma said recently in the state assembly Congress members asked if there was Koch Rajbongshi community in South Salmara and what is the use of autonomous councils in the area. Just see the land records and one can find the Koch Rajbonshi people with land in these areas 60 years back.”
Sarma said that already the state government has given land pattas (certificate) to the indigenous people. “More certificates will be given in future.”
At the height of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest in 2020, Kamtapur Autonomous Council was proposed by the government.
Sarma said that process is on to accord scheduled tribe status to Koch Rajbonshi community. “We had done extensive talks in last two years and almost 90 percent work is done.”
The six communities being considered for ST status include Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia, Maran, Matak and Adivasi.
