Canada’s labour market takes bigger hit than expected, shedding almost 63,000 jobs amid lockdowns
Canada’s economy ended 2020 on a low note, as the spread of COVID-19 and government restrictions intended to curb the disease led to the country’s first net drop in employment since the pandemic-related recovery began in the spring, Statistics Canada said Friday.
StatsCan said the economy lost about 63,000 jobs in December, the first decline in overall employment since April and worse than the consensus economist estimate of 38,000 positions.

Ontario reports record COVID-19 cases, hospital CEO warns of vaccine shortage
Canada’s most populous province has shattered another record for new daily COVID-19 infections.
Ontario is reporting 4,249 new cases today, a record-breaking figure even as it factors in 450 earlier infections which were delayed in the tally.
The province also had 26 additional deaths from the virus.

AHS shuts down hairdresser operating during pandemic
An Alberta Health Services inspector has issued a closure order to a hair salon operating in northwest Calgary.
Hair Cru Salon, located at 29 Crowfoot Rise S.W., was found to be offering hair cutting services to the public during the pandemic.
Hair salons were among the businesses ordered to stop providing services in mid-December, in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The salon has been ordered to close and remain closed until the Public Health Order is rescinded by the province.
