“Usually within this three-week period of time we’d see maybe half the cases, and maybe in a whole winter season we might see between 70 and 150 cases altogether,” Friedman said. “So, you can understand where our concerns are coming from.”
Injuries range from concussions to more serious brain injuries, abdominal and pelvic trauma, ocular injuries, and dental trauma.
“With tobogganing you often see a wide assortment of injuries, but we’ve seen a lot of kids with fractures, lacerations and concussions,” Friedman said. “It’s often the collision that results in the severity of the injury.”
Almost 50 per cent of accidents were the result of crashing into hard objects like benches, tables, fences, posts, rocks, and trees.
