Quebec’s largest pediatric hospital announced Thursday night it will start treating adult patients under the age of 40 with COVID-19 as of Jan. 18, setting aside six beds in its intensive-care unit for that purpose.
Ste-Justine Hospital will also admit trauma victims under the age of 30 — that is, individuals who have been injured in accidents. The temporary expansion of Ste-Justine’s mission comes as COVID-19 hospitalizations are surging in Montreal, and signals authorities believe there will be many more in the next two weeks.
“These changes are being made in a harmonious and co-ordinated manner,” a spokesperson for the Côte-des-Neiges hospital said in a statement.
Florence Meney noted that Ste-Justine already has expertise in caring for young mothers and 17-year-olds, suggesting the transition to treating young adult patients with COVID-19 will be a smooth one.
“Since the start of the pandemic, doctors, managers and other staff at Ste-Justine have responded by helping out with vaccination and in (long-term care centres),” Meney added. “This intervention is being taken in an exceptional context that justifies exceptional measures.”
