Fadi Mourtada isn’t sure what his business will look like a month from now.
Under Quebec’s new curfew, Mourtada will need to close down his Sherbrooke St. W dépanneur by 7:30 p.m., four hours earlier than usual.
For dépanneurs, they’re hours that count. Evenings are when people stop in for last-minute dinner ingredients, Mourtada said, or late-night beer runs.
He estimates the reduced hours will cost him about $100 a night in profit. Or roughly $3,000 over the next month, half of what he pays in rent.
“What can I do? You have to close your doors, you have to follow the rules,” Mourtada said between helping customers Friday.
“But who is going to pay us? Nobody. And who needs to pay our rent? Ourselves.”
As Quebec falls under a month-long 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew Saturday, many businesses, such as dépanneurs and grocery stores, will lose key business hours to allow employees to get home before curfew.
