Meghan McCain, daughter of the late six-term U.S. Senator and 2008 Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain, slammed an Arizona county Republican committee on Saturday for censuring her mother over her support of President-elect Joe Biden.
On Saturday, the Maricopa County Republican Committee passed a resolution to censure Cindy McCain for endorsing Biden over President Donald Trump in the 2020 election, according to the Republican Party. The move merely represents symbolic disapproval of McCain, but the Arizona Republican Party has signaled that the state party could soon vote on a similar resolution.
“Oh how will she ever survive such a thing?!?” Meghan McCain tweeted. “And this is THE REAL problem facing the Arizona GOP, my mom! A few days after a domestic terror attack led by maniac Trump supporters.”
Newsweek reached out to the Arizona Republican Party for comment.
According to Azcentral.com, many of the participants of the county vote did not wear masks or practice social distancing during the meeting held at Dream City Church in Glendale. The president acknowledged Biden’s win for the first time on Thursday, however, some speakers at the meeting falsely stated that Trump had won and will remain in power.
Cindy McCain officially endorsed Biden in September, less than two months before the 2020 presidential election. She also featured in campaign ads for the Democrat. At the time, she explained that she had crossed party lines because she was “deeply concerned” about the current state of affairs.
“Really what led me to this decision was like so many other people in the country, I’ve been watching what’s going on, and I’m deeply concerned,” Cindy McCain told NBC Today host Savannah Guthrie. “Joe Biden represents to me the kind of values and integrity and courage that we want in the president, and someone who I think would have my back as a citizen who lives and someone who lives in a neighborhood and has a family and all the other things that people do.”
Following news of the Maricopa County Republican Party vote, Cindy McCain tweeted, “I am a proud lifelong Republican and will continue to support candidates who put country over party and stand for the rule of law.”
Meghan McCain has butted heads with the Arizona Republican Party on several occasions over the past few months. Last week, she told the party’s official Twitter account to “go to hell” in reaction to a disparaging tweet about her father.
“As the sun sets on 2020, remember that we’re never going back to the party of [Mitt] Romney, [Jeff] Flake, and [John] McCain,” the Republican Party of Arizona Twitter account wrote on New Year’s Eve. “The Republican Party is now, and forever will be, one for the working man and woman! God bless.”
“Honestly whomever is running this twitter account can go to hell,” she tweeted in response.
