A high-ranking NYPD cop who had reassigned after accusations he posted hundreds of vile, racist remarks online has now been suspended without pay, The Post has learned.
James Francis Kobel — a 30-year-veteran and the former commanding officer of the NYPD’s Office of Equal Employment Opportunity — was placed on administrative leave on Jan. 7th, law enforcement sources said Saturday.
Kobel, 50, had been reassigned to the Transit Borough Command for the Bronx and Queens on Nov. 16 after the allegations surfaced.
The 30-year veteran of the force was transferred following a damning investigation by the City Council’s oversight committee.
The committee found he had hidden behind the username “Clouseau” to post “racist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic and homophobic sentiments” on the “The Rant,” a notorious message board used by cops to complain about their jobs.
He posted racist comments some 500 times between the summer of 2019 and fall 2020, the committee’s probe had found.
Among his slurs, Kobel called Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark “a gap-toothed wildebeest,” referred to former President Barack Obama as a “Muslim-savage,” and called Mayor Bill de Blasio’s son, Dante, a “brillohead,” according to the 13-page report.
He’s previously denied he’s written the racist messages online.
“I am unfamiliar with any of these posts,” Kobel told the New York Times. “I’m unfamiliar with ‘Clouseau.’ I don’t post on The Rant.”
