The article of impeachment charges Trump with high crimes and misdemeanors for whipping up an insurrection and disrupting the peaceful transfer of power. The resolution cites Constitution’s 14th Amendment, noting that it “prohibits any person who has ‘engaged in insurrection or rebellion against’ the United States” from holding office.
According to the latest media reports, at least 210 House members have co-sponsored the measure. The vote to impeach President Trump is expected to take place on Wednesday. This is the Democrats’ first step toward making Trump the first president in history to be impeached twice.
Some of the international media reports suggest that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi too has stepped up the pressure on Vice-President Mike Pence to act to remove Donald Trump from office for his alleged role in last week’s riots.
Pelosi has chalked out a plan shared in a letter to members on Sunday evening even as parties struggle on Trump’s political future in the remaining 10 days of his office before Democratic President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in on January 20.

In her letter, Pelosi said leaders of the Democratic-led House will try to pass a resolution on Monday calling on Pence to activate the 25th Amendment of the Constitution to declare Trump incapable of fulfilling the duties of his office. If Pence does not respond, Democrats would proceed with impeaching the president for a historic second time.
The Democrats and an increasing number of fellow Republicans have accused the Republican president over the riot, following a rally in which Trump repeated unsubstantiated allegations of vote fraud. Five people died in the attack, including a Capitol police officer.
