Manager Jose Mourinho has denied suggestions that Tottenham are interested in signing Stuttgart striker Nicolas Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, 22, has established himself as a regular member of the Stuttgart first team. The Argentina international has bagged five Bundesliga goals from 10 appearances this term.
He scored the opener as they beat Augsburg 4-1 on January 10. That result left Die Roten 10th in the German top-flight standings.
Gonzalez’s form has seen him linked with a move away and Spurs’ name has been mentioned. There was even talk that dialogue has opened over a winter move but Mourinho was having none of it.
“Discussions with who? Not with me,” the Portuguese replied to reporters at his press conference.
Although Spurs currently seem uninterested, it would be no surprise if a few big clubs started to monitor his progress. He bagged 15 goals from 29 appearances when Stuttgart dropped into Germany’s second tier last season.
It helped the club finish second in 2.Bundesliga and bounce back at the first attempt. He has also scored twice for Argentina from five outings – against Paraguay and Peru.
Spurs take on Fulham on Wednesday in a match originally scheduled for December 30. It was postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak at Craven Cottage.
Tottenham will be without Argentinian Giovani Lo Celso, while Mourinho will make a decision on his compatriot Erik Lamela. He has been absent since being pictured breaking coronavirus rules over the festive period.
“He is available but I don’t know, but I think you understand what I want to mean,” Mourinho said. “He can be selected for tomorrow, he can. Legally he can but I still have a decision to make.”
Cottagers boss Scott Parker is furious that the game was only given the go-head on Monday, calling it “scandalous”.
Spurs sit fourth in the table, with Fulham 18th and three points from safety.
Mourinho hits back at Ozil
The future of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil has occupied many column inches in recent times. The former Germany playmaker has not featured for the Gunners this term and is looking for an exit.
He wants to continue playing and has hinted at a move to Turkish club Fenerbahce or MLS franchise DC United. With the rivalry between Spurs and the Gunners, the midfielder said he would rather ‘retire’ than move to Tottenham.
Mourinho coolly pointed out that, to date, nobody at his club has presented the German with that option.
