The European Parliament won’t return to Strasbourg until March at the earliest, according to a draft decision to be taken Wednesday by the institution’s President David Sassoli.
“The part-sessions in January and February 2021 shall take place in Brussels,” a draft of the decision, first reported by Brussels Playbook, said. “It is dangerous for Parliament to convene in accordance with its usual procedures.”
The move is likely to displease the Elysée, which has been pressuring the Parliament to return to Strasbourg, its official seat. French President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly expressed frustration at Sassoli’s decisions to cancel numerous plenary sessions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
But Sassoli’s draft decision noted that “to protect the health of Members and staff and contribute to limiting the spread of the coronavirus, travel activities should be reduced to a minimum.” It added that “a remote participation regime should be introduced for the part sessions” and other meetings.
