A 31-year-old man was found dead on Crowsnest Mountain Jan. 9 after he sent an emergency signal indicating he’d been injured.
Crowsnest Pass RCMP were alerted around 6:30 p.m. after receiving a signal sent from the man’s Garmin SPOT, a satellite SOS device that provides search and rescue organizations in the area with coordinates of the carrier when activated.
Ten Pincher Creek Search and Rescue and Crowsnest Pass Fire and Rescue members attended the area that evening with six hiking to a base point on the mountain and the remaining four climbing further into the terrain.
RCMP said that due to “high winds, darkness and the potential for avalanches, the team was forced to turn back.”
The following day, Jan. 10, crews rejoined the efforts adding Kananaskis Country Public Safety to their ranks and were able to locate the owner of the SPOT device who was deceased.
The man was climbing alone and RCMP said they believe the rugged terrain and ice, wind and snow conditions contributed to the incident.
