Calling games off a TV screen does make Robertson’s job different and more difficult because he can’t see the entire ice surface and, as a result, can’t anticipate plays as well. There’s also not the excitement of the crowd to feed off — but there probably won’t be any fans in Canadian rinks for the duration of the season, anyway, because of COVID-19.
“It’s going to be so weird to call a game at the Bell Centre, where usually there’s 21,000 people,” Robertson said. “But I can’t wait for that. That’s going to be cool, too.”
Robertson, 50, grew up in Trenton, N.S., a small town with about 3,000 people. Before getting the job calling Canadiens games, he was a senior sports producer for EastLink TV, covering Atlantic University Sport and junior hockey for more than a decade and a half while also doing play-by-play for the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads.
